Panning, Whip Pans and Safe Shots: Camera Terms Explained Plainly
A plain-words guide to three terms crews use on fast-moving stories: the whip pan, the safety shot and the cutaway, and why we teach them in short field sessions.

Why the vocabulary matters on a fast story
The whip pan: a fast swing from one subject to another
The safety shot: the frame you hope not to need
The cutaway: the shot that lets an edit breathe
How we teach these in a short session
None of these terms is difficult, but using them confidently changes how a crew works under pressure. A steady safety, a few useful cutaways and a clean whip pan when the moment calls for it will make your footage easier to edit and safer to broadcast. If your team would like to practise them on realistic scenes, get in touch through the contact page and we can talk through what a session would cover.
