The kit and habits we rely on when training crews for fast events

A look at the tools, materials and methods behind our short field camera sessions for reporters and crews, from support gear to the shot-list cards we hand out.

Why the kit list is short on purpose

Support gear: monopod, shoulder rig or handheld

Audio materials that rescue a story

Shot-list cards and the method of three frames

Checking footage in the field before it travels

Matching the session to the newsroom

The tools and methods we rely on in training are plain on purpose: a modest kit, steady support, reliable audio, a pocket shot card and a habit of checking before sending. None of it is clever, and all of it holds up when a story moves fast and the light is poor. If your crews already own good cameras, the gain usually comes from routines they can repeat without thinking, and those are what the sessions are built to leave behind.
